Absorbency

Given that a horse urinates about 10 litres per day, the absorbent capacity is a key consideration when choosing the bedding. Horse Cover bedding is 50 % more absorbent than wood shavings.

Horse Cover bedding will therefore soil less quickly, maintaining excellent sanitary conditions and avoiding infections such as scratches or frog rot.

Reduced handling

The high absorbency of Horse Cover bedding optimises handling.

Horse Cover bedding is "self-cementing", allowing easy, selective cleaning.

Straw, on the other hand, cannot be selectively cleaned as it is difficult to remove droppings without also removing large amounts of unsoiled straw.

The European Centre of the Horse has calculated approximately 20 to 25% less of material to be cleared out!

Horse Cover thus protects the horse by keeping away insects, while at the same time defending against fungus and microbes. Over time, the use of Horse Cover cleans the stables by reducing the population of pests.
Comfort - Stability

Softness, stability and thermal insulation! From the very start, we will see that the bedding expands, separates and reaches twice its initial volume to form a soft, stable mattress that is comfortable for the horse and for its joints.

It is recommended to slightly dampen the bedding to speed up the expansion process.

With a thickness of approximately 7 cm of granules on the floor, the Horse Cover bedding will form a comfortable, insulating layer of material between the horse and the ground. By comparison, a 30 cm deep layer of straw or wood shavings is needed to achieve the same effect.

As straw is lighter, the horse will tend to quickly push it to the sides of the stall, leaving it to lie on the bare floor. This phenomenon has never been observed when using Horse Cover bedding, that forms an insulating layer on the ground.
Compostable

This bedding can be used, as is, as an organic amendment (addition of humus and soil structuring effect) together with a nitrogenous supplement on meadowland, for example. When composted and mixed with organic matter, it provides additional carbon.

Smaller volume and easy to clean…

Straw and wood shavings require frequent mucking out of the stalls, and create a large volume of manure. This entails high maintenance and removal costs.

Thus, the time spent cleaning the stalls is considerably reduced.
Appearance

Horse Cover bedding forms a light, soft, attractive mattress. The stall is more ordered.
Low dust content

As fine dust particles are the cause of many respiratory problems suffered by horses, it is very important that the bedding is dust free.

According to an article by Marinell Harriman, written in collaboration with two vets, Marliss Geissler and Carolynn Harvey, the fine dust content of bedding such as Horse Cover is very low compared to other types of bedding (straw and wood shavings have a high dust content).

Horse Cover bedding is sieved many times to remove the dust that can be generated during the production and bagging processes. The latest tests conducted by the Agronomic Research Centre of Gembloux indicated a dust content of 0.1%.

The bedding then undergoes a final vacuum treatment prior to bagging to remove any remaining traces of dust.
Sterilisation

The temperature during production rises above 100°C, which subjects the bedding to an efficient sterilisation process.

By comparison, straw and wood shavings, that are not sterilised, can bring numerous microorganisms and fungi into the stalls (allergies, respiratory problems – broken-windedness – chronic emphysema, skin problems, etc.).

Moreover, the bioprotector has an antimicrobial anti-fungal and insect-repellent potential, which further reinforces the sanitary aspect of the bedding. The fact that the bedding remains dry for a longer time also has a considerable health effect, in particular on the feet of the horses!
Not eaten

According to the studies conducted, there can be no denying that horses do not eat Horse Cover bedding.

Taking straw or flax bedding as an example, it has been proven that if eaten in excessive amounts, these can give a horse colic.

Also, when eating straw, the horse finds itself in a confined, dusty atmosphere.
100% natural

Horse Cover bedding is made entirely from compressed sawdust...

No additives are used, only the lignin acts as a natural binder. Our product therefore doesn't undergo any special treatment and contains no chemical products.

It should be noted that many farmers currently apply chemical treatments to their cereal crops. These pesticides and insecticides are thus present in the straw and can cause allergies in horses.

Studies & Tests

Horse Cover is the result of a year-long study conducted with the European Equine Centre.
Numerous tests were performed on the mechanical characteristics of the bedding and on the Bioprotector.

Use

Spread 6 bags of Horse Cover per 9 m² stall. After 24 hours, you will see the bedding transform into a soft mattress and increase in volume to double the initial volume. It is recommended to slightly dampen the bedding to speed up the expansion process.
The volume will increase as urine is absorbed.
It is recommended to clean the bedding daily and to aerate it every 3-4 days in order to avoid the formation of solid blocks and to ensure maximum comfort.
The bedding is easy to clean. Simply remove the material cemented together by urine and the droppings that will have remained on the surface and replace with new Horse Cover bedding. A regularly maintained stall will therefore not need to be completely mucked-out.
The soiled bedding can be mixed with the manure and spread on the fields.
